Why I’m Supporting David Miliband

We can’t afford to get the choice of party leader wrong. As the Tories discovered after 1997, leaders without vision, experience, and popular appeal can throw their parties on the electoral scrap heap for a generation.

It seems to me that David Miliband’s vision for the country is grounded in the fight against inequality, which is at the heart of what drives the Labour Party. It’s arguably the reason for the creation of the party in the first place.

I think there was a public perception over the last 13 years that the Government had stopped seeing their job in those terms, and that the focus had narrowed just to economic and public service management.

But David Miliband has now put tackling inequality back at the centre in his leadership campaign.

He is fighting for equality of opportunity, with proposals to transform education in this country, giving all children an equal opportunity to succeed.

He is fighting income inequality with a vision to rebuild the economy with a return to full employment, a  living wage, a High Commission to look at top pay in the private sector, and the creation of hundreds of thousands of new green jobs

And he is fighting for equality of outcome with a progressive taxation system, and a strong welfare state.

David has the experience to lead the party, and the country. In his 9 years as an MP, he spent 5 as a minister. He was behind the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme, which rebuilt or refurbished every school in the country, he secured the Climate Change Act, and was a major contributor to the 1997 manifesto.

Finally, David is popular with the electorate. He is well known and liked all over the country, and in a Newsnight focus group of undecided voters, the entire panel judged that David was the best of the leadership candidates.

I think it’s essential that we elect David Miliband as the next leader of the party. He is the candidate with the vision, experience and popular appeal to lead Labour to victory.

  • Hi
You have just mentioned my main points why I support David Miliband too!

    Well done.

But there is a huge plague to the small business – in particular the online one:

    1. Manufacturers and Distributors and some Wholesalers are selling direct to public and at the same time selling to us – the small business. How can we compete? You can see loads of examples in Amazon Sellers programs – they all there to sell and only the Manufacturers and Distributors and some Wholesalers sell more, really!

    2. The Distance Selling regulation
I welcomed it, but when I saw it was ONE WAY – yes, ONE WAY – what are we still doing online for? It is not DEMOCRATIC at all and the only one that can apply it without much impact to their business is – guess again? Manufacturers and Distributors and some Wholesalers! It is a Law made to help the consumer certainly and ONLY Manufacturers and Distributors and some Wholesalers – again – it is made against small businesses.
It is an attempt to from the Large Corporations to get rid of the small family businesses and I remember once Peter from the Dragons also making a ‘bad’ sentence about the small family businesses saying: aaah, you are the typical husband and wife business!
As in: you are not here to make money – EXACTLY, we are here to work like any other Employee, but being our own Bosses and Businesses like Peter’s are killing these businesses. No wonder of the Postal Shops closures too and many Butchers etc.
    I could continue for ages!

Will David Miliband look at this?
The main problem for long lasting Jobs and Small Family Businesses is GLOBALIZATION and we ALL know that – but even Labour NEVER speak about it!

Will the TESCO friendship end? The one that certainly created jobs, but created unstable and low paid jobs to make the numbers!

    Am I right?

    Bye
    Mauro

  • Nada Higman:

    Hi Dave,

    Hope you are well.

I wanted to get in touch as I received an email this morning from Unite the Union, which am a member of. They have invited all members to vote for the next Labour Leader and are in support themseleves for Ed Milliband and are urging us to vote for him come September 1st when voting starts.

I know you are passionate about David Milliband for leader and wanted to know what your personal thoughts on Ed Milliband were as a potential leader. Have you ever met him? It would be great to know what you think as I trust your opinion.

On a separate note, I look forward to any new stuff from Blur when you are all in a good place to get together.

Lots of love and hugs, Nadax

      Hi Nada,

I have briefly met Ed, and he seems like a nice person. I know he has had a glittering ministerial career, and has achieved a lot. However, I am supporting David because I think he is the leader most likely to win the next election for Labour.

All the leadership candidates have contributed to transforming Britain in one way or another. But I think we have to play our ace card at the next election, or the Tories will have a decade to undo Labour’s reforms. I think David is our ace card, and it’s not just me that thinks so. In a Newsnight poll of 9 undecided voters, all 9 picked DM as the best person to lead the party.

      Thanks for getting in touch.
